Mixing indistinguishable systems leads to a quantum Gibbs paradox

چکیده

The classical Gibbs paradox concerns the entropy change upon mixing two gases. Whether an observer assigns increase to process depends on their ability distinguish A resolution is that "ignorant" observer, who cannot gases, has no way of extracting work by them. Moving thought experiment into quantum realm, we reveal new and surprising behaviour: ignorant can extract from different even if gases be directly distinguished. Moreover, in macroscopic limit, case diverges ideal gas: as much extracted were fully distinguishable. We show more microstates system than found naive counting semiclassical statistical mechanics. This demonstrates importance accounting for level knowledge its implications genuinely modifications thermodynamics.

Discerning “indistinguishable” quantum systems

In a series of recent papers, Simon Saunders, Fred Muller and Michael Seevinck have collectively argued, against the folklore, that some non-trivial version of Leibniz’s principle of the identity of indiscernibles is upheld in quantum mechanics. They argue that all particles—fermions, paraparticles, anyons, even bosons—may be weakly discerned by some physical relation. Here I show that their ar...

Quantum Correlations in Systems of Indistinguishable Particles

We discuss quantum correlations in systems of indistinguishable particles in relation to entanglement in composite quantum systems consisting of well separated subsystems. Our studies are motivated by recent experiments and theoretical investigations on quantum dots and neutral atoms in microtraps as tools for quantum information processing. We present analogies between distinguishable particle...

Gibbs Paradox and Similarity Principle

As no heat effect and mechanical work are observed, we have a simple experimental resolution of the Gibbs paradox: both the thermodynamic entropy of mixing and the Gibbs free energy change are zero during the formation of any ideal mixtures. Information loss is the driving force of these spontaneous processes. Information is defined as the amount of the compressed data. Information losses due t...

Entropy Calculation of Reversible Mixing of Ideal Gases Shows Absence of Gibbs Paradox

We consider the work of reversible mixing of ideal gases using a real process. New assumptions were made concerning infinite shifts, infinite number of cycles and infinite work to provide an accurate calculation of entropy resulting from reversible mixing of ideal gases. We derived an equation showing the dependence of this entropy on the difference in potential of mixed gases, which is evidenc...

Gibbs paradox of entropy of mixing: experimental facts, its rejection and the theoretical consequences

Gibbs paradox statement of entropy of mixing has been regarded as the theoretical foundation of statistical mechanics, quantum theory and biophysics. A large number of relevant chemical and physical observations show that the Gibbs paradox statement is false. We also disprove the Gibbs paradox statement through consideration of symmetry, similarity, entropy additivity and the defined property o...
